Life Lessons I Learned From The Office

If you are one of those people who has never seen The Office, quickly go watch all nine seasons and then come read this post. Kidding! You will learn all you need to know right here, but you should definitely still go watch every single episode... multiple times. Now time for the lessons:

1. It's all about who you surround yourself with. As you can imagine, working at a paper company is not the most glamorous job. However, the people that makeup Dunder Mifflin in Scranton are truly incredible, and they help each other enjoy going to work. This goes to show that even the worst situation in the world is manageable when you're surrounded by the best people. This also works the other way where even the best situations can turn sour if you're around the wrong people.

2. You must have patience. Do you remember that saying, "Good things come to those who wait." The best example of this on the show is Jim's patience waiting for Pam. Having the strength to wait for what you deserve is not easy- in fact, it's quite difficult. Can you imagine if Jim had settled for Karen? Changes the outcome of his entire life. Never settle for less than you deserve, even if that means you must wait a while more. Life is not a race or competition to see who can reach certain milestones first. Other great examples are Michael waiting for his soulmate to start a family, Dwight waiting for Angela, Erin waiting for her family, and Daryl waiting for his promotions.

3. Have the courage to say what you mean and not hide your feelings. Honestly, this happens like a million times throughout the show. Someone puts their heart on the line with the risk of rejection, and I truly think that is incredible. It's one of the most terrifying feelings, and yet time and time again someone on the show demonstrates the courage to risk it. If you watch even one season you will see this, and there is no possible way for me to narrow it down to the best examples.

4. Everything from Season 3 Pam. Honestly, season three Pam is a big mood that more of us need to adapt. She wants those she cares about to be happy, but she also realizes that she shouldn't have to sacrifice her own happiness for others to be happy. Towards the end of season three Pam daringly walks across fire peebles. It is in this moment she finally musters the courage to tell Jim how she feels and decides to quit letting people walk all over her. She does all this in a way that shows great respect to others, but it is also important to note she does all this in a way the shows immense respect to herself.

5. Every day is better when you're laughing. Michael Scott has been branded as a bad manager, but somehow the Scranton branch continually outperforms all the others. I think this is because Michael is able to bring joy and laughter into the office every single day. The positive effects on the employees transfers into their work performance. I mean, seriously, how great can a day be if you didn't even laugh. "Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life." Laughter makes the world a better place.
